The Brickyard 400 is an annual NASCAR Cup Series race held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is nicknamed "The Brickyard" because its original racing surface, installed in 1909, was entirely paved with bricks. While the track was later paved with asphalt, a 36-inch strip of the original bricks remains at the start/finish line, serving as a reminder of its history. The "400" in Brickyard 400 refers to the race's distance, which was initially 400 miles long.
